"Rustboy is a short film project created by Brian Taylor that started as a simple hobby but turned into his full-time job. The goal is to have the film produced using modest, affordable home software without the benefit of high-end 3D packages usually associated with films of this nature. A challenge to see how professional a result can be achieved on a very small budget with a big imagination." [note from Brian]
With no projected finish date for the 24 minute short film, Brian Taylor does a great job with this book to anticipate the final product of Rustboy.
There were 2 reasons why I preordered this book. #1 A love for computer animation and #2 showing how a simple hobby can gain popularity and success with a little dedication.
The book is full of story boards, concept paintings, 3D images, sketches and comparisons of before and after texture rendering. Without giving the complete story away, you are given a better understanding on what the film story will be like and some inside details of Rustboys adventure.
This is not a technical book but there are sections explaining Brian's concepts, techniques and critical decisions needed to accomplish a great product. A nice addition.
What exactly does this book contain? Check out the thumbnail previews, it contains almost every page in the book.
After reading this book, I now anticipate this DVD even more about the story of this Frankenstein/Pinocchio character.
A few quotes from the book that stuck with me:
"I'll make a little movie about this Rustboy fellow,' can turn into an incredibly complicated obsession. And the deeper you go the more there is to learn and the bigger the task becomes." p11.
"This appears to be the curse of most creative people - starting a project, only to abandon it at an early stage in favour of a 'better' idea that occurs to you along the way" p15.
"but I've come this far and there's no turning back now." p26
Rustboy has a strong fan base with world wide interest. I'm very pleased with the purchase and since I was one of the first 1000 buyers, my copy came signed and numbered.
When I originally posted about Rustboy on my personal site, I received this reply:

Cool article. The book looks amazing - you just inspired me to order it. I'm in Canada and the total cost of the book with shipping is $80 USD. A few bucks - but this money goes right to Brian to help fund the project - so it's well worth it!
Be sure to check out the preview quicktime videos for a taste of Rustboy.
Anything is possible if one is willing to spend the time and effort on a great idea.
