Flathead Cyclone Golf Disc Review
- Product:
- Flathead Cyclone Golf Disc (company site)
- What's Good:
- Versatile, stable flight path, good in wind.
- What's Bad:
- Easily scarred, lame graphics.
I just got back from a great windy game of disc golf and it seems apropriate to write a disc review! When I started organizing a disc golf tournament for charity last year, I started looking around for discs so every competitor would be on a level playing field. The Disc Golf Association stepped up with a generous discount and we bought a couple of cases of their Flathead Cyclone Golf Discs. They proved to be good versatile all-round discs, which was important because we weren't professional enough to be carrying a seperate disc for each situation.
As the DGA suggests, these discs have a very flat profile and a dense construction. This gives them a flat trajectory, which you really notice when throwing into the wind. In today's gusty game, I was able to achieve some surprisingly long throws even directly into the wind or up-hill.
The Flathead Cyclone in action at the tournament.
The lip of the disc is a really nice shape that gives just enough grip without curving too much. I find it quite easy to control the flight of the disc predictably on almost each throw.
For those who've never played disc golf before, keep in mind that this flat profile and dense plastics make the disc difficult (and painful) to catch. They aren't intended for playing a game of toss. This isn't a criticism of the product, just an FYI.
The life of this disc is one negative aspect. Simply hitting hard objects with the disc (like asphalt, trees, posts, etc.) causes noticable scarring right away. After a few games, the lip of the disc becomes reasonably rough on your hands. My only other criticism, and granted it's a weak one, is that the graphics are a bit boring. Compared to these fine examples, they just don't seem too creative.
Have fun out on the course.
