Wow that program has come a long way since i last used it..Might be worth it to play around with it. I personally just use irfanview as it lighting quick and has many neat features, nothing like acdsee ...but dandy all the same..

Thanks for the review.

Indeed, ACDSee is one of the best if you look at the available features. I have been using it for don't remember how many years. Unfortunately, version 7.0 released recently has a huge bug. The "File Associations..." configuration dialog will mess up your system so much that you will need a few hours of manual recovery using registry editor to undo the damage. Not only ACDSee7 is unable to associate files with itself correctly, but it also deletes registry keys responsible for associating files with other programs, even if you don't want to associate those files with ACDSee and prefer to keep the old associations. For example, if you click file.zip in Windows Explorer you would normally expect WinZip window to popup, but instead you will get a message from the print server that file.zip has been printed successfully. That is because ACDSee has taken deliberacy to remove "Open" action for zip files and thus "Print" has become the default one. I can give many other examples of that kind, but that is not the point. I would not recommend anyone to even try ACDSee 7.0 until they have released a bugfix version. (P.S. I have tried it on 3 different PCs so the problems are very unlikely to be caused by something other than ACDSee itself.)

To me it seems they have simplified some things too much, and over complicated/removed some things that worked brilliantly before.
I use ACDSee in a professional studio every day all day in conjunction with photoshop for more than five years now..

I noticed that the 'favourites' function has been altered in a bad way..
I use 'favourites' all the time and have done since v2.42 and have use every version since..
In v7.0 it seems you can add a directory to your 'favourites' - but then it seems that there is no interface option to show you the 'favourites' listing window pane.
I tried in vain for a while to see if I needed to config my layout, but NOWHERE does it mention this.
Also online help is useless for anyone wanting even slightly advanced help topics.
You have to PAY another $10 for a manual!!

V5.0 still gets my vote as the best/most functional release.
If you want your hand held and lot's of 'Wizards' to do the work for you then v7.0 is for you.

Well damn! I was wondering why every time I open a zip file now, it prints a page listing the files.

Thanks Sergei for the added information on this review.

How do I change the "Default layout" in the browser so that the "default" becomes one of my own making? I don't want to have to personally change it every time I open the program. It should open in my personal layout. I previously had it that way but cannot remember how I did it.

I have an acd program that came with my Emachine. I specified that it not access my other photo programs. It did and now I have lost hundreds of photos. All I get is blank BLACK. Does anyone know what I should do?

My God, the search feature is appalling. In earlier versions you could right-click on a folder and return all images in subfolders. Simple. Now if you try the same it defaults you to an elaborate laborious search menu with tiled windows that hide themselves and fall apart. Then you have to click too many places all over again. It's worse than Windows File Search. You can't even search within the file browser. And don't get me started on the irritating database which it forces you to use - and slows everything to a crawl.

That and it dials home. Why? Why? Why!

What a mess, this program has become!

I've used ACDSee for years. It's the best program out there for viewing images. Here's what I can't stand about v7. It now wants to open any mp3 files when you are trying to just flip through images in a folder. This irritates the crap out of me! If I want to listen to an mp3, I'll open it with Winamp. I've gone through all the settings and turned off any association with audio and video but it still does it. What a piece of cr**p!

I recently downloaded a trial of ACDSee with WS_FTP to evaluate. Certain features are very useful but annoyingly most Window XP image handling features are disabled. Main problem is printing multiple images on one sheet, you can't do this anymore and have to purchase an additional program , on top of the full package, to re-enable this!. On completion of the 30 day trial I decided that the package was not beneficial for my requirements. Then the problems began ! Uninstalling causes major grief with WIN XP, nothing taken away is re-enabled and other critical files having some association are disabled - you cannot even access Windows Internet Explorer to access the WEB. Had to resort to the system recovery tool to return the computer to an earlier setting (before the deletion) and now face the ACDSee purchase screen everytime I attempt to view an image (which it won't let me do anyway!) Not a very professoinal outfit virtually blackmailing you into purchasing their product to continue image manipulation. Hope you find this useful (wish I had read it before downloading the free trial!!!).

I purchased ACDSee 7.0.102 in July and every time I go to burn a CD of photos from the program, it goes through the entire process, and then gives me an error message that the CD could not be added as a photo disc, and then that not all the information was copied and to try again. The images seem to be on the disc, but it is very disheartening to rely on this to save my precious photos!
ACDSee systems customer service has given me numberous suggestions in fixing the problem, to no avail.
Now, no one will respond to me on getting a refund, and to call I must pay international calling fees to Canada!
Has anyone else had a problem of this nature?

Does anyone have a copy of acdsee version 7? I bought it about a year ago and now I'm moving to another PC and cannot find it anymore to reinstall. On acdsee site there is only version 8. Support does not respond to any requests. The forums on their site are down probably to discourage people to express their disgust at their latest version. I could try to copy over my directories and look through registry to see what I need to copy over manually, but that's too much work to waste on this rather mediocre program; I regret I bought it, but I was short on time to test the trial version in full and relied on claims on their site and in "documentation". Unfortunatley there does not seem to be a clear "winner" in photo organizer/light editor category you can bet your money on. Definitely not Acdsee, not anymore at least.

finally after about 2 weeks (it was Cristmas time, I agree), I got the reply from ACDSystems and got my download of version 7. Together with Bibble Pro it's quite usable combo despite numerous quirks of ACDSee. Just lower your expectations and it's not that bad.

Thanks a lot for everyone who left their opinions on this site!
This helped me greately!
I tried for a short time version 7 and DISLIKED IT VERY MUCH, but was not sure, if it is because of a long use of others versions, since, I believe version 1 or even less (?)
After a short time of usage of version 7, it happened that OS, was corrupted, not because of v7, there were different issues, but JUST NOW I'm at the point of reinstalling OS and in doubts, if I would install v7, or go back.... I had a feeling that oldest version much better than that c**p v7, but was not sure, now I'm
Will use v3 or even v1, but not v7
Thanks a lot for your opinions and to the author of this site !!!

Since I wrote this review, I have since purchased ACDSee 8 and have had no problems with it. It has been an excellent image browser and organizer.

I am using ACDSee 7 on XP SP2, and the program seems not to show me the folders that I have already opened in Windows Explorer. I tried to find a checkbox in the Options menu for that, but failed. I imagine there's a kind of exclusion filter that prohibits ACDSee to display the folders and files that are si,ultaneously opened by the Explorer but the option is nowhere to be found. It's really annoying! To get to see the folder in ACDSee not only I have to close the Explorer window, but also to restart ACDSee!

I love the idea behind ACDSee, the concept is great, the execution leaves a great deal to be desired. There are a number of issues I have noticed through the several versions I have had over the last few years. The first and major issue is that from time to time ACDSee will erase the file format information for pictures stored in the database - rendering the pictures unusable for any program. I have lost several family photos of since deceased relatives to this -I will never trust ACDSee with the originals again. The program works great most of the time, but when it does screw up, and seems inevitable with this program, it tends to screw up bad. The second major problem I have had with all the last three versions is that they have tried to make it play video and audio formats, and the associations never remain intact for long - shortly it will cause a system error and occasionally alter the file to the point of being unusable.

I love the this program, and if they can ever get the bugs out so that it will work consistently without the system lockups and the data corruption - I would recommend it to anyone. As of right now though, I would only suggest the advanced user try it, and back up your system first - or you will be cussing later.
