During our one-week stay in London, England, my wife and I were looking for relatively cheap accommodations. We wanted a clean room with a private bath and a decent location. The St. George’s Hotel gave us that, but nothing more.
The Room
We had two stays at the St. George’s Hotel. The first room was on the second floor facing the street. Street noise was noticeable, but not enough to keep you awake. Though we had requested a room with a double bed, the room had a single and a double bed. This didn’t leave much free space.
A television with a few channels was mounted on the wall (saving space - a nice touch). There was also a dresser with a mirror, a small night-table, and a good-sized closet with hangers.
The bathroom appeared to have been recently renovated with a small but good shower and tile floor. The room did not have a few of the basics we would have expected in a similarly-priced North American hotel. For example, there was no hair-dryer or shampoo.
On our second stay, the room had just one double bed (what we had asked for), but was also quite a bit smaller. The bathroom in this room was extremely small. The shower, toilet, and sink were in a single vinyl unit not much larger than most full-sized bath/shower units.
There was an “English breakfast” included, but it was over by 9AM, when we we just waking up, so we didn’t try it. The breakfast was actually served at a neighbouring hotel.
The Location
It was important that we be within walking distance of a tube station. The St. George’s Hotel was about two blocks from Victoria Station, which was particularly convenient as it is the nearest stop of the Gatwick Express from Gatwick airport.
This also puts you within a relatively short walk from Buckingham Palace and Saint James Park. The rest of the city is easily accessible through the nearly tube station at Victoria Station.
The street is a clean and we were comfortable walking around the neighbourhood (though there isn’t too much to see within a couple of blocks). This block of Belgrave Road is full of similarly sized and styled hotels.
Bottom Line
There was nothing particularly special about the St. George’s Hotel. There is no view and rooms aren’t particularly nice. That said, it is reasonably priced and within a short walk of a key tube and train station. It met most of our expectations and requirements, but certainly did not exceed them.
