BlackRapid R-Strap Review
- Product:
- R-Strap (company site)
- What’s Good:
- Ease of use, Comfort, Placement of camera.
- What’s Bad:
- Connection between the camera and the R-Strap
Two of us at silverorange own R-Straps. The RS-1 and RS-3. As demonstrated in this video, the concept is fairly straight forward. Instead of the camera strap being attached to the top of the camera and around your neck, this strap is connected to the bottom of the camera and is used like a shoulder bag.
The strap is fairly basic. A well padded adjustable shoulder strap and a solid hook. My RS-3 comes with a cell phone holder pouch that I have never used. It could be a reason why this model is now discontinued. My preference is to have one of these straps as small, simple and light as possible. The cell phone can stay in my pocket.
The natural movement of the camera to your eye is smooth but I have found it even more beneficial to have the camera hang to your side under your arm. This is opposed to the camera directly in front of you hanging awkwardly because of a heavy lens.
The FastenR is the product that the strap connects to. This would be my only complaint. I find that it tends to loosen but more importantly, it's big and interferes with the use of a camera bag. I've found that they don't play well together and probably not designed to.
For photo walks or situations where you are not wanting to use a camera bag, the R-Strap is a fantastic design and operates much better then having an off balanced camera hanging around your neck.

I got one of the RS-1 straps for Christmas from my wife. I agree that the FastenR gets in the way of storing the camera in a bag, and it's my only complaint with an otherwise great product.

BlackRapid has announced a new FastenR that may or may not be better.
